Is Etsy oversaturated when it comes to digital products? I get this question all the time and the simple answer is no. There are a lot of digital product listings on Etsy, however it is a growing area and it is really only in its infancy and will continue to grow. The question shouldn’t be about are digital products oversaturated and should instead be about how can I jump in and sell digital products to make a fulltime income. This is a simple recipe, you need to have an ideal audience in mind and create products they need and want, present them in a professional high quality mockup, and ensure that you describe them accurately to get traffic. The more products you have in a specific area, the more authority you build in that niche.

In this blog post I want to share my personal journey – of how I turned my passion for creating digital products into a thriving fulltime income on Etsy. If you’ve ever wondered whether it’s possible to make a living selling digital products, I’m here to tell you that not only is it possible, but it’s also easier than you might think! So, grab a cup of your favorite beverage, cozy up in your favorite spot, and allow me to share with you the inspiring story of how it all began and the invaluable lessons I learned along the way.

How did I get started and make Etsy a fulltime income?

When I first ventured into the vast world of Etsy, little did I know that it would become a transformative turning point in my life. At the time, my husband and I were working tirelessly as graphic designers, creating websites, logos, brochures, and annual reports for clients. While we loved what we did, we found ourselves trapped in the never-ending cycle of trading our time for money.

Recognizing the limitations of this business model, we knew we had to explore alternative avenues that would allow us to break free from the constant hustle and create a more sustainable income stream. And that’s when the idea of opening an Etsy store sprouted in our minds, offering us a glimmer of hope and a chance to chart a new course.

The Surprising Success of Etsy Banners

To my sheer astonishment, my Etsy banner store experienced a level of success that surpassed all my expectations. In just a month, what started as a small venture grew from generating zero income to a steady stream of $70 per week. This was a pivotal moment for me because, at that point, we were charging $500 for a website project that would take weeks to complete. The notion of earning a passive income from something I had already created was nothing short of mind-blowing!

This unexpected success became the catalyst that propelled me into the world of digital products. The allure of creative freedom, the joy of making designs that I loved, and the prospect of earning income from my passion enticed me to dive deeper into this captivating realm. I realized that I could make what I wanted, put it up for sale, and watch as customers flocked to purchase my designs, often resulting in multiple sales from a single creation. The allure of this hands-off, scalable business model was irresistible.

Exploring New Avenues to reach a fulltime income on Etsy

Building on the success of my Etsy banner store, my husband and I embarked on an exhilarating journey of exploration. We ventured into new product categories, seeking opportunities to expand our offerings and cater to the evolving needs of our customer base. This phase was characterized by a continuous process of experimentation, observation, and adaptation.

As keen observers of trends within the Etsy marketplace, we paid close attention to the products that resonated most with customers. We sought to identify the most lucrative niches and capitalize on them. Whenever we noticed a particular product gaining traction and popularity, we embraced it wholeheartedly. If Etsy banners were a hit, we doubled down on creating even more banners. When invitations became a sought-after item, we responded by increasing our focus on that category.

This dynamic approach, driven by customer demand and marketplace trends, allowed us to ride the wave of success and witness the exponential growth of our business.

We continued creating and listing products in this store until we had hundreds of products and a constant stream of sales coming in to the store every day. Before we knew it, we had replaced a fulltime income. (However, being creatives we couldn’t just stop there and so we continued to create and build lots more successful digital product etsy stores, in total 18)

Key Tips for Etsy Success

Now that you’ve heard the inspiring tale of my journey and witnessed the incredible power of selling digital products on Etsy, it’s time to equip you with some valuable tips that will help you navigate your own path to success. Whether you’re just starting out or seeking to elevate your existing store to new heights, these tips will serve as guiding principles on your Etsy adventure.

  1. Research, Research, Research: The first step in achieving Etsy success is to conduct thorough research. Immerse yourself in the Etsy marketplace, scour Pinterest for inspiration, and stay attuned to the latest trends. Identify products that are in high demand but don’t have too much competition (often you can determine these by niching down further for specific products). Finding a niche that aligns with your creative strengths and has room for growth will give you a head start in establishing a foothold in the market. Don’t niche down too much and box yourself in, instead use categories to help you cater to lots of smaller niches within your chosen niche.
  2. Create a Web of Complementary Products: Don’t limit your offerings to a single product. Think beyond individual sales and envision a network of interconnected products. When a customer purchases one of your offerings and has a positive experience, consider what complementary products you can offer them. This approach not only encourages repeat sales but also enhances customer satisfaction and loyalty. (You can also promote these complimentary products in your listing images and descriptions)
  3. Perseverance Pays Off: Building a successful Etsy store and achieving a full-time income is a journey that requires time and patience. Don’t get discouraged if you don’t see immediate results. Keep trying new strategies, learn from your experiences, and never give up on your dreams. Every step you take, no matter how small, brings you closer to your goals.

The Power of Resilience and Moving Forward

Before I wrap up this blog post, I want to share a little story with you. When I received my very first message on Etsy, I was thrilled. But to my surprise, the customer had mistaken my store for someone else’s and linked me to a completely different product. It could have been disheartening, but I persevered.

I want to encourage you to adopt the same mindset. Stay resilient, even in the face of setbacks or challenges. Remember that success is built gradually, one step at a time. Every effort you make, every sale you secure, and every lesson you learn contributes to the growth of your business. Trust the process, embrace the journey, and never lose sight of your passion. There will be days when you want to quit, and the truth is most people quit just before they start to see the sales rolling in. Stay the course, be determined to figure it out and you will see success!
